What We Offer
Sarasota carpentry work lives or dies on one fact: this city sits on the Gulf, and the Gulf never stops working on wood. Homes near Siesta Key, Lido and Longboat take salt air every day. Homes further inland still carry Florida humidity through nine months of the year. A carpenter in Sarasota who treats trim, doors and outdoor woodwork the way an inland shop would is handing you work that swells, rusts and opens at the joints within a few seasons.

How We Work
This page covers the carpentry services SWFL Carpenters provides across Sarasota: interior trim and millwork, crown molding, wainscoting, door and window casing, built-ins, screened lanai and outdoor living trim, and the repair work older Sarasota homes constantly need. Sarasota's barrier islands and bayside neighborhoods push airborne salt well past the beachfront. Salt settles on metal, holds moisture against it, and accelerates corrosion on anything plated rather than solid. Standard bright or electro-galvanized fasteners that survive for years inland can stain, pit and fail near the water. On any exterior or lanai work, fastener choice is a first decision, not an afterthought: hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel where the exposure justifies it, and never mixing metals that react against each other in damp conditions.
The same logic applies to the wood itself. Painted poplar trim that performs fine in a dry climate can wick moisture at end grain here. Exterior-facing trim on a Sarasota home does better in rot-resistant species or properly rated composite and PVC trim, with every cut end sealed before installation. End grain is where water enters, and a milled board leaves every cut end wide open until someone seals it.
A large share of Sarasota's housing stock was built decades ago, and older homes bring their own carpentry problems. Framing that has moved over time leaves walls out of plumb and floors out of level, so casing, baseboard and crown have to be scribed and fitted to the room as it actually is, not as the plans once drew it. Ripping out old trim also reveals settling cracks and uneven drywall edges that have to be accounted for before new molding goes up.
Humidity adds a second layer. Solid wood trim moves across its width as moisture content changes through the year. That movement is why joint design matters on every long run and every corner. A mitered inside corner looks clean on day one, but as the boards shrink they pull away from each other and the miter opens into a visible gap. A coped inside corner, where the end of one board is cut to the profile of the mating board, stays closed through that movement because the overlapping cut has room to ride. On long wall runs, a scarf joint cut at a shallow angle hides seasonal movement far better than a square butt joint, which telegraphs every bit of shrinkage as a dark line.
The screened lanai is Sarasota's signature room, and it is also a halfway environment: protected from direct rain but fully exposed to humidity, temperature swings and wind-driven moisture. Trim and finish carpentry in a lanai has to be spec'd like exterior work even though it feels like interior space. That means corrosion-resistant fasteners, sealed end grain, and materials rated for damp exposure, from the ceiling paneling to the column wraps to the door casings.
Outdoor living carpentry in Sarasota also includes pergolas, deck skirting, privacy screens, outdoor kitchen enclosures and poolside built-ins. Each of these sits in the same wet, salty, high-UV environment, and each one fails first at its connections. Face-screwed joints in soft wood, unsealed cuts, and contact between wood and bare concrete are the three failure points that show up again and again. Good exterior carpentry here is mostly about refusing those three shortcuts.
Inside the house, Sarasota carpentry covers the full finish package: crown molding, baseboard, door and window casing, wainscoting, paneling, coffered ceiling details and built-in cabinetry and shelving. Crown in particular asks a lot of the installer because ceilings are rarely flat and walls rarely square, so spring angles have to be checked and corners planned before the first cut. Wainscoting layout has to be worked out wall by wall so panel widths land evenly at corners and around openings rather than leaving a sliver at one end.
Built-ins earn their keep in Sarasota homes where storage is tight and floor plans are open. A built-in window seat, entertainment wall or mudroom bench is scribed to the room, which means it hides the out-of-square reality of the house instead of fighting it. If you are weighing repair against replacement on existing trim, that judgment call is exactly what an estimate visit is for.
Yes. SWFL Carpenters works across Sarasota, including Siesta Key, Lido Key, Longboat Key and bayside neighborhoods, as well as inland Sarasota, Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch. Waterfront exposure is factored into material and fastener recommendations from the start.
Every job is priced from its own scope: linear feet of trim, material choice, site conditions and how much fitting older walls require. We do not publish flat prices because they would not be honest. Call (941) 212-2560 for a free written estimate based on your actual rooms.
A single room of crown or base is often a short job, while a whole-house trim package or a built-in runs longer. The schedule depends on material lead time, the amount of scribing older walls need, and whether painting or staining is part of the scope. You get a realistic timeline with the written estimate.
Often, yes. Many older profiles can be matched from stock molding, and where a profile is discontinued it can sometimes be built up from stacked standard profiles. Bring a sample or a photo and we can tell you what is realistic before any work starts.
A finish carpenter owns the details that decide how the work ages: coped inside corners, scarf joints on long runs, scribing to out-of-plumb walls, and sealing end grain. A handyman visit suits small isolated repairs. If the job involves whole rooms of molding, built-ins or outdoor trim in salt exposure, finish carpentry is the right trade.
Yes. Lanai trim is treated as exterior work even though the space feels indoors: corrosion-resistant fasteners, sealed cut ends and materials rated for humidity and wind-driven moisture. That spec is what keeps the joints closed and the finish intact.
